Correspondence from Franz Werfel, 1916-1917, n. d.

Letters of friendship in which Werfel frequently offers advice and philosophical reflections. Includes his responses to Gerstel's poetry, some references to his own work, and a handwritten copy of his poem later entitled "Gesang eines Verdammten an die seligen geprüften der Erde." Also included is an explanatory cover letter from Kohn, dated 1964.

Bermann-Fischer Verlag and Bermann-Fischer/Querido Verlag were publishing enterprises established by Bermann Fischer during his exile from Germany and in the immediate postwar period; they were eventually superceded by S. Rühle-Gerstel (née Gerstel) appears to have been a good friend of Werfel; they knew each other in Prague and corresponded during the First World War.
